Artist statement: Ned Kelly was the most famous Bushranger in Australia's history. Edward, or Ned Kelly was born in 1845 and died 1880. This sculpture is Ned Kelly in his legendary suit of armour, that, in the day, weighed 44kg. Ned was an outlaw after he and his brothers shot dead three policemen. Ned made his last stand at Glenrowan in June 1880 where he was captured after being shot in the legs by police and later hanged at Melbourne jail in November 1880. Ned's helmet and armour are now one of Australia's recognised symbols in Australian culture. Love him or hate him, he is here to stay.
