93. Moonlight Vigil

Artwork number: 93
Artist: Saskia Lopes
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Description: Blue trees
Artist statement: I painted this in response to being stranded on the mainland, trying to get back to our friend's holiday home on Molloy Island. It was cold, dark and I was tired and alone. I have tried to capture the tension between the dramatic beauty of the night- the trees shifting in the wind, the deep, endless sky, the glimpses of the dark, slow river- and the unnerving sensation of being very small and a spectator only of this drama that began before I did, and will keep going after I'm gone. It was as if I was keeping vigil, waiting with growing desperation for the ferry light to start moving towards my side of the river, and the trees and night were keeping their own mysterious moonlit vigil too.
