Description: This tree, which I have known for years, stands alone. I have named it Maverick To my delight and surprise, for the briefest of moments due to what must have been a unique natural phenomenon, a face was revealed - Maverick's face. I just had to share it.
Artist statement: Whether it is the giant Tuart that speaks of greatness, or the Northwest drought-stunted ghost gum that speaks of survival, I view all trees as souls of our incredible country. Portraying trees, especially eucalypts, in various ways with various materials, has been the major trigger in my 60-year arts practice. For different reasons, a familiar landscape can change in appearance from day to day and from season to season. It can also change at night. When the sun has gone down and we are snug in our warm beds, our landscape is still close. After dark, another perspective in our quest for a better understanding and appreciation of our landscape's diversity is revealed. Sometimes there are subtle changes: at other times, changes are dramatic.
This tree, which I have known for years, stands alone. I have named it Maverick. I like to think of it as a free spirit which resists conformity, and marches to the beat of its own drum. To my delight and surprise, for the briefest of moments, due to what must have been a unique natural phenomenon, a face was revealed - Maverick's face. I just had to share it.
